About Jennifer Weigand Sanabria Jennifer Weigand Sanabria is a seasoned art educator with 17 years of experience teaching in public schools in Northern New Jersey and Austin, Texas. She holds a Master’s degree in Art Education from Texas Tech University and currently teaches at the Bemis School of Art at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center at Colorado College. Her work at Bemis includes leading a variety of courses, organizing community-based art projects, and regularly presenting at Family Adventure Day events. Jennifer is passionate about fostering creative, inclusive, and accessible art experiences that connect with diverse audiences and inspire meaningful engagement through the arts. Outside of the classroom, she enjoys spending time with her two young children and exploring trails on her mountain bike. About "Untitled" (L.A.)(1991) by Félix González-Torres Conceptual artist Félix González-Torres (Cuban American, 1957–1996) created “Untitled” (L.A.) (1991) the year his long-time partner, Ross Laycock, died from complications of HIV/AIDS. Part of his larger “candy spill” series, the piece explores identity, love, consumption, grief, and remembrance, beginning with a quantity of candy approximating the weight of a healthy human body. Viewers are invited to take one or more pieces of candy, symbolizing life’s transience, mortality, and the generosity of giving. As it is consumed and gradually disappears, the work evokes personal and collective reflections on impermanence and absence, mirroring the body’s decline and fading memories. Periodically replenished, the candy also speaks to the sweetness of communal care, enduring love, and shared human experience. By physically and emotionally engaging with the piece, viewers become co-creators, each interaction shaping the artwork’s evolving meaningHosted by: Ent Center for the Arts, Galleries of Contemporary ArtsAdditional Information can be found at: https://mlc.uccs.edu/event/11288734

- May 312:00 PMBreaking the Silence: Re-humanizing Law Enforcement & Healing Through TraumaThe NOWAK Society presents Lieutenant Sarko Gergerian. Lieutenant Sarko Gergerian is trained in psychedelic-assisted therapies, including ketamine and MDMA therapies for depression and trauma. Lt. Sarko re-imagines the relationship between police and psychedelic culture and what it might look like for police officers to access psychedelic-assisted therapy. Lieutenant Sarko Gergerian is a police officer, therapist, and founding member of the Community and Law Enforcement Assisted Recovery Program (C.L.E.A.R.). C.L.E.A.R. is a novel community policing methodology that has demonstrated success in uniting public safety with public health through people with lived experience. Lieutenant Sarko gets to the heart of things: the very philosophy behind law enforcement and how to make a real impact on communities and public safety. Traumatic stress and depression among law enforcement is higher than you might think. Over one-third of law enforcement experience post-traumatic stress. Law enforcement face a 54% greater risk of dying by suicide than the general population. And yet few seek support for the external and internal challenges they’re up against. Stigma is very real. The idea of needing “tough skin” to do the job is a pervasive roadblock to being able to openly explore what’s really going on. Let’s rehumanize the person behind the uniform. Lieutenant Sarko Gergerian of the Public Safety and Health Department of Winthrop, Massachusetts seeks to break the silence and explore together what it means for law enforcement to bridge the divide from trauma to connection.Hosted by: UCCS Mycological SocietyAdditional Information can be found at: https://mlc.uccs.edu/event/11276868
