The Mountain Lions sought to win for the first time against Regis and advance to the RMAC Championship Tournament final, but after sophomore attacker Sarah Urbanic was injured at the start of the semifinal game, UCCS lost to Regis, 13-5, ending their RMAC season.

Four minutes into the first quarter of the game on April 25, Urbanic landed awkwardly on her right knee after taking a shot. The game was stopped as she was walked off the field and was put on crutches.

Urbanic is the first Mountain Lion ever to be named Division II National Offensive Player of the Week by the IWLCA, an honor she received earlier this month

The first goal of the game came 5 minutes in, when freshman midfielder Sofia Watts scored after an assist from sophomore attacker Emma Grace Martin, bringing the score to 1-0.

Less than a minute later, senior midfielder Erica Rivera ran halfway down the field to pass to junior attacker Sydnee-Anne Moeller who spun around to pass a Regis defender and put the ball into the bottom left corner of the net, 2-0.

After the Mountain Lions’ early lead, the Rangers started a 4-goal run.

The Rangers scored their first goal with 7:30 left in the first quarter. Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Jordyn Nuñez prevented the Rangers from tying the game with a diving save from a shot sent to the bottom right corner.

The Rangers persisted and tied the game two minutes later, 2-2. The first quarter ended with the Rangers leading 3-2.

In the second quarter, a Regis goal made the score 4-2. Rivera scored an unassisted goal 5 minutes in, but Regis closed the half with another goal, extending their lead, 5-3.

Regis prevented any scoring by UCCS in the third quarter. By the time Watts scored with an assist by Martin in the fourth, Regis had a 5-goal lead, 9-4.

Shortly after, the Rangers scored again, beginning a 4-goal run to bring the score to 13-4.

The game ended for the Mountain Lions with a hat-trick by Watts in the final seconds, 13-5.

Watt’s hat-trick led the team’s scoring. Martin recorded 2 assists, while Nuñez made 10 saves.

“I think that the team adapted to challenges faced in the first quarter and never gave up,” Martin said. “We’ve always thought of this year as a rebuilding year for us. For the future years, we’re definitely going to push ourselves harder and be more disciplined. Keep our championship mindset.”

The semifinal loss brings the conference season to a close. There is a chance the Mountain Lions will be selected to compete in the NCAA Division II Tournament that begins on May 16.

Lacrosse ends their conference season with a record of 6-4. They still have yet to beat Regis, who has won the RMAC tournament for the last six years.
