El Pomar Plaza
El Pomar Plaza with Autumn leaves
The El Pomar Plaza sits along the main pedestrian spine at the crossroads of the Library, Osborne Center, and the Engineering Building.

Aside from the spectacular views of Pikes Peak, the El Pomar Plaza also features a two-ton statue of a mountain lion carved from Colorado marble and sculpted in Aspen Colorado. Interestingly, the statue was originally commissioned for Pen State, but a friend of a former UCCS Chancellor outbid Pen State for the statue to come to UCCS.

Another historical fun fact is that our mascot wasn’t always a mountain lion. Between 1991 and 1997, UCCS’s mascot was a giraffe and athletes competed as Fighting Longnecks. The mountain lion mascot chosen by the students in 1997 was evidentially given his current name, Clyde, in 2011.
